This one-of-a-kind 1975 Roosevelt dime was bought and sold at an online auction run by GreatCollections. It is now worth more than the only other known example of this coin.

The missing mint mark is what makes this coin stand out. When you buy coins in the US, they usually have an initial on them that shows which mint made them.

This dime was made in San Francisco, which is known for making proof sets for coin collectors. It should have had a “S” mint mark on it. But for a few years, dies from the U.S. Mint’s main facility in Philadelphia forgot to include these identifying marks.

In 2019, the other dime from this very rare pair was sold for a huge $456,000. Not long after that, it sold privately for more than $500,000. In the meantime, this coin’s value kept going up until it reached its highest point at the end of the sale on October 27.

For collectors, the thought is exciting: there may be more hidden gems waiting to be found. The two known mistakes were found in proof sets. In 1975, the San Francisco mint made almost 3 million of these sets. This means that this rare mistake could be present in other sets as well.
