Who Makes the Final Cuts?
Chiefs Focus @ChiefsFocus Derek Dietz @OriginalMrDietz
Offensive line went from a weakness to a strength over the last 16 months. This will create some good competition and some surprising cuts in August. First off, we must assume that a deal will get done with Orlando Brown, or this whole article is trash, and you can stop reading now.
In my opinion, you have five clear cut starters. From left to right, Orlando Brown, Joe Thuney, Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith, and Andrew Wylie. Some will argue that Kinnard will start at RT, but let’s see how his first big league camp goes first. You can put Nick Allegretti’s name is pen as well, as he is one of Andy’s most trusted back-ups. That is 7 names that I feel will be dressed for the opening game at Arizona. Now we must look at who is left on the roster, and where they could fit in.
Austin Reiter returns to Kansas City, now a 7-year Pro from South Florida. He is an interior offensive lineman by trade but can play anywhere. He knows the system and is obviously well liked in the building to get another chance. He is a little older now, so he will have to show value.
A pair of rookies are on this list as well. Mike Caliendo from Western Michigan and Vitaly Gurman from Toledo. Clearly Brett Veach likes watching Wednesday Night MACtion on ESPN 8 the Ocho, as he frequently picks up players from this conference. Caliendo turned down medical school for a chance to play in the NFL and was All-MAC First Team. Gurman played a little bit of everything at Toledo, but mostly at Left Tackle. He was All-MAC Third Team. Gurman projects as a Guard in the NFL.
Lucas Niang. We all were optimistic for him, but COVID and injuries have held him back. I feel he is auditioning for his own job as the team heads to St Joe.
Geron Christian is a fifth year player from Louisville. Another player that has been plagued by injuries and bad teams. He was drafted by Washington and has also played for Houston.
Prince Tega Wanogho is an interesting player picked up off the waiver wire. An original draft pick by the Eagles, he had a successful career at Auburn, so he is at least battle tested in the SEC.
Here are my 9 players I have making the roster, and the cuts below that:
