Before we even have a pre-season game, let us see what the staff writers are thinking as to who is in and who could be out.
Who is someone you see on Offense, which was a major contributor to be cut?
Derek: The easy answers are Lucas Niang and a WR. Niang is a fine player, just never available and the Chiefs have depth to cut him free. What wide receiver remains to be seen, but if Hardman, JuJu, MVS, and Skyy are locks, I will go with Josh Gordon as a surprise cut. With the depth that we are seeing at running back and most likely keeping four RB’s , I also would not be shocked if either FB Mike Burton or TE Noah Gray get cut. With four RB’s there is no room for 4 Tight Ends, one will have to go.
ChiefsFan4Lyfe: It is crazy to say. I was huge on Ronald Jones making the roster as RB1 but with the emergence of Isiah Pacheco in the first week of camp, return of McKinnon and CEH working to stay healthy, I would not be surprised if RoJo was either cut or a trade piece just like Carlos Hyde. However, I am not giving up on my guy. He is reunited with USC teammate JuJu Smith-Schuster, the Chiefs know that and they are going to find ways to get RoJo the touches he needs to make his case this preseason. The Chiefs could carry four running backs and a fullback in Burton, but RoJo has to show out this preseason.
What about defense, any surprise cuts coming?
Derek: With all the new young talent drafted on defense this is a much tougher question. DeAndre Baker was just cut. With the early performance at CB of McDuffie, J Williams, and J Watson I see Chris Lammons as the odd man out. Another surprise cut could be DE Josh Kaindoh unless he has really developed over the last year. As far as linebacker, it sounds like Jermaine Carter may get caught up in the numbers game and be on the outside looking in.
CF4L: My surprise cut on Defense is Lonnie Johnson Jr. We traded for him, and he knows Justin Reid from his playing days in Houston. However, rookie corners Trent McDuffie, Joshua Williams, and Jaylen Watson have taken more reps with the 1s than Johnson has. Of course, in my DB preview article, I said Baker was a roster bubble guy and this past week Pete Sweeney put Johnson on that list. There is so much talent in that defensive back room. With a great showing this preseason especially on special teams, Johnson should also make his case to stay.
Who is someone who you have making the roster, that maybe was on the outside looking in a few weeks ago?
Derek: Elijah Lee, LB. He is looking good and looking fast out there. Also, it never hurts when Dave Toub raves about you- and Elijah Lee is getting the love right now. Also, above I stated Josh Gordon could be getting cut, that means Justin Watson makes the roster.
CF4L: Mike Rose, LB. The undrafted rookie free agent from Iowa State is a hidden gem. In 2020, he became Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Charles Goldman of KC Sports Network wrote this about Rose: Rose’s ability to play all three linebacker spots effectively certainly puts him in the mix, but special teams play could be the determining factor here. He reminds me a lot of Cory Littleton. The former Rams, Raiders and current Panther’s linebacker who went undrafted and became an All-Pro special teamer. Rose has that potential to become that same type of player and he completes an underrated linebacker unit.
