Authorities reported that a motorist lost control of their car and collided with another car Tuesday night in Gilroy, killing three kids from Hollister High School.

Three students were killed in an automobile accident, and a former student engaged in the collision was critically injured, according to a statement issued by the San Benito High School District on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as 17-year-old Anzhel Villegas-Lemus, 18-year-old Brandon Alarcon, and 17-year-old Victor Lujan by the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office in an update released Wednesday afternoon.

According to the California Highway Patrol, just before 7 p.m., a motorist heading west on Shore Road west of Lake Road lost control of the vehicle, swerved into oncoming traffic, and collided with a car heading east on Shore Road.

The incident claimed the lives of the driver and two back passengers, one of whom was 17 years old. According to the CHP, the driver and passenger of the second vehicle were taken to a hospital by helicopter, along with a fourth occupant.

“This loss is profoundly felt by all of us,” Kevin Medeiros, the principal of Hollister High School, said in a statement. “We send our sympathies and best wishes to these people’s friends, family, and loved ones. We are aware that our students, employees, and the community at large will be greatly impacted by this news.”

Investigations were underway to determine the cause and circumstances of the crash.

CHP Captain Noel Coady remarked, “We offer our condolences to those impacted by this tragic incident.” “Obeying traffic laws is every driver’s responsibility, with profound consequences when ignored.”
