A man from Illinois has been sentenced to 11 years in prison after being caught with more than 50 pounds of methamphetamine in his car.

The incident occurred on Interstate 80 near Grand Island, Nebraska, and resulted in a major drug bust by the Nebraska State Patrol.

The 22-year-old, Juan Martinez Arroyo, was pulled over by a state trooper on August 17, 2023, for following too closely in his eastbound Toyota Camry.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, both Martinez Arroyo and his passenger, Edwin Correa Miranda, provided inconsistent details about their journey, raising suspicions.

This led law enforcement to bring in a drug-sniffing dog to the scene.

The K9 quickly detected the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle, prompting a full search by the officers. Upon inspection, authorities uncovered a duffle bag containing 11 packages of meth, weighing a total of 54 pounds (or 24,777 grams).

The Nebraska State Patrol Crime Lab later confirmed the packages tested positive for methamphetamine.

In addition to the drugs, officers discovered a loaded Ruger handgun along with a magazine containing five rounds of ammunition hidden under the passenger seat.

Martinez Arroyo was charged with possession with intent to distribute more than 50 grams of methamphetamine, resulting in his 11-year prison sentence. After serving his time, he will also face a 5-year supervised release.
