727 days since the MSU mass shooting

Sharing is caring!

Seventy-seven days have passed since the shooting deaths of Brian Fraser, Arielle Anderson, and Alexandria Verner on the campus of Michigan State University, which left five others wounded. Two years have passed since the catastrophe on Thursday.

In journalism, we frequently cover dreadful anniversaries. For my family and the thousands of others who lost loved ones on campus on the evening of February 13, 2023, this is very difficult. It is hard to pass Berkey Hall or the MSU Union without experiencing the loss, the terror, and the fear again.

However, we can still have days like this one. Here are some resources that can be useful if you require assistance and wish to attend classes on campus.

Similar to previous year, MSU is suspending classes on February 13. However, the university will continue to operate, including its dining halls, CATA transportation, recreational sports facilities, and mental health support services.

Volunteers will be on hand at these sites to help with luminary kit pickup, resources and assistance, and QR codes for comments on the permanent monument.

There will be open, heated tent areas with volunteers to help people find resources and assistance, distribute luminary kits for pickup, serve hot cocoa and bottled water, and point community members to QR codes to offer input on ideas for permanent memorial designs. These areas will also be visited by comfort dogs.

The three places are:

close to The Rock, at the intersection of Auditorium Road and Farm Lane.

close to the Grand River Ramp, at the intersection of East Circle Drive and West Circle Drive.

close to the Sparty statue at the intersection of Chestnut Road and Beal Street.

On Monday, exhibits made for the one-year celebration will be put up in the two affected and now-renovated areas of the MSU Union and Berkey Hall.

The MSU Union Art Gallery’s “Reclaiming Space” exhibition is open until Saturday and gives visitors a chance to express their individuality and creativity through the sculptures and murals that comprise the show.
