After what appeared to be a fall at a waterfall, a muffled 911 caller claimed, “I was running from a bear.” Authorities, however, claim that the caller was a murderer who had set up a deadly fall. Yes, a body was found by the authorities. He wasn’t the one.
The audio is available for listening below. On October 18, a Polk County, Tennessee, 911 dispatcher sent a call to her Monroe County equivalent. According to authorities, Brandon Andre, a hiker, reported falling from a cliff. Investigators actually think the caller was 45-year-old Nicholas Wayne Hamlett.
During the search for Hamlett, deputies published pictures of him, which are included in the audio below.
The Polk County dispatcher in this recording informs her colleague that he has two percent left on his cell phone. He tumbled from a cliff next to some cascades. He landed on his head. He claims that he is unable to raise his legs and is in excruciating pain.
In the end, the Monroe County dispatcher asked the caller—who was allegedly Hamlett—for more details about his whereabouts.
In the audio, he said, “I’m at the waterfall.”
Associated coverage:
The call was received by authorities at Tellico Plains, close to the Charles Hall Bridge on the Cherahola Skyway. When first responders arrived and conducted a search, they found a deceased man who had Brandon Kristopher Andrade’s identification on his body.
However, upon further investigation, law enforcement found that the victim was not Andrade and that they had stolen and used the ID multiple times elsewhere. They assert that Hamlett was wanted in Alabama for a parole violation and had been using the ID.
As can be seen below, investigators ultimately determined that the victim was 34-year-old Steven Douglas Lloyd.
Investigators claim that Hamlett befriended Lloyd with the goal of murdering him and robbing him of his identity. According to detectives, Hamlett lured him out into the woods and devised a plan to conceal the murder. He allegedly wanted to collect life insurance money in Andrade s name.
Thanks to the help of a hospital staff member who recognized Hamlett as a wanted person, he was captured in South Carolina. His wife, Taylor Ann Fiber, is charged with helping him elude the police.
