Man goes overboard from Princess Cruise ship prior to San Francisco arrival

Before the Princess Cruise liner arrives in San Francisco on Monday, authorities have begun searching for a 72-year-old man who may have gone overboard.

Princess Cruises said that the incident involving a Ruby Princess passenger occurred early on Monday morning, before the ship arrived in San Francisco at 6:50 a.m. Near the conclusion of a five-day round-trip journey to Ensenada, Mexico, the passenger vanished. On November 27, the ship left San Francisco.

“Princess Cruises is saddened to report that a 72-year-old American male is believed to have gone overboard earlier today ahead of the arrival of Ruby Princess into San Francisco,” the cruise line said in a statement.

Authorities say the U.S. Coast Guard was called and instructed to look for the individual who went overboard from the helicopter. The search is being carried out by at least one aircraft.

Additionally, Princess Cruise officials stated that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is looking into the situation with the cruise line’s full cooperation.

“The ship has been exhaustively searched multiple times without result, and CCTV footage has also been meticulously examined. “This is being treated as a man overboard incident after ruling out other possibilities,” the statement read.

Additionally, Princess Cruises has sent their “condolences to the family and friends of the guest who was traveling alone.”

The incident caused the ship’s 16-day journey to the Hawaiian Islands to be postponed, but the Ruby Princess is still scheduled to depart on Monday.

The Ruby Princess is the same ship that damaged the hull and needed repairs after colliding with the wharf at Pier 27 last summer.
