A 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder in Texas after reportedly shooting and killing a mother of four during a road rage altercation near San Antonio, forcing her car to overturn into a ditch.

According to local ABC affiliate KSAT, on the evening of November 8, Julie Marie Butcher, 31, was traveling on Interstate 35 when she got into a heated disagreement with another motorist, Nicholas Hernandez, and was subsequently killed by him. According to Hernandez’s arrest affidavit, he got into a fight with Butcher for unclear reasons, shot her in the head, and then ran away.

She was declared dead by officials when Butcher’s car was reportedly found in a ditch.

Hernandez, according to authorities, was unable to keep quiet about what happened following the shooting and apparently told many acquaintances, who in turn told detectives.

At least four witnesses reported that they had discussed the murder or related matters with Hernandez. Authorities were allegedly notified by one that Hernandez requested that he dispose of two 9 mm round casings. Hernandez detailed the incident in texts that were provided to authorities by another individual.

Additionally, according to KSAT, Hernandez reported a stolen Beretta 9 mm handgun he owned to the San Antonio Police Department 15 hours after Butcher’s passing. Butcher was supposedly murdered using the same model.

In a statement released after Hernandez’s arrest, Julie Marie Butcher’s family said, “After weeks of waiting for answers, we are deeply grateful for the progress towards justice for Julie Marie Butcher this Thanksgiving.” They called it a significant step forward in this challenging path.

According to a family member, “We find solace in the commitment of law enforcement and the tremendous support from our community, even though the pain of her loss is still with us.” We have found strength in your prayers, generosity, and support.

Butcher is described as a cherished wife, mother, daughter, and friend on a GoFundMe campaign created for her father, David Delgado. She was the general manager of a New Braunfels Papa John’s.

According to the organization’s website, she leaves behind her loving husband, Michael Butcher, and their four cherished children: Hailey, Jaxson, Michael, and Kenneth. They are currently dealing with an unimaginable loss.

On Sunday, Hernandez was being detained at the Bexar County Jail while he awaited his initial court date. There was no information on his bond.
