Officials say a convicted murderer broke out of a Delano courthouse Monday morning and is being sought by state and Kern County law enforcement.

Around 10:40 a.m., Cesar Moises Hernandez, 34, allegedly escaped from the Delano courtroom on Jefferson Street, hopped a fence, and ran away from a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation van, according to 17 News.

CDCR officials did not provide an explanation for Hernandez’s escape from staff. Hernandez escaped staff control immediately after showing up at the courts for a hearing, according to a statement issued by prison officials.

As the prisoners travel throughout California, CDCR monitors their movements.

Hernandez was convicted of first-degree murder in Los Angeles County and is currently serving a sentence ranging from 25 years to life. In 2019, he was found guilty and given a term of North Kern State Prison.

Hernandez entered a no contest plea to making a weapon and possessing alcohol or narcotics while confined, a potential third strike that carries a life sentence. Hernandez was due to appear in court on Monday.

Hernandez weighs about 160 pounds and stands 5 feet 5 inches tall. He had on an orange prisoner’s jumpsuit.

Authorities asked the local population to be on guard and to report any suspicious behavior or sightings right away. Hernandez is regarded as a threat.

Do not approach Hernandez if you see him; instead, call 911 or Lt. Anthony Sotello at 661-721-3600.
