When Hamlet police check a vehicle for DWI, they discover meth and a needle

After allegedly driving while intoxicated and in possession of meth, a guy is facing several counts.

A magistrate’s ruling states that on November 26, 31-year-old Robert Leslie Melton Jr. was operating a vehicle on Jefferson Street in Hamlet while under the influence of an impairing substance.

A loaded syringe and an unknown quantity of meth were also allegedly found by Hamlet Police Department officers.

Melton was taken into custody by police and accused of driving under the influence, possessing methamphetamine, and possessing drug paraphernalia.

He is being held on a $10,000 secured bond at Richmond County Jail, and his next court date is set for January 9.

Melton, a registered sex offender, was found guilty in 2012 of performing indecent conduct on a minor.

The victim was 12 years old, and Melton was 17 at the time of the event, according to the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry. He was incarcerated for about ten months.

His only prior conviction occurred in 2021 for not registering as a sexual offender. They revoked his original probation the next year and gave him a six-month prison sentence.

Melton was sentenced to three months in prison in 2023 for a second infraction.

All suspects facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court.
