According to a news statement from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, a woman in her 40s was reportedly tied to a tree at gunpoint in the Pebble Beach neighborhood of Monterey County on Wednesday before being released by onlookers.
She informed sheriff’s deputies that she saw a man following her at 7:30 a.m. while she was strolling along a route in a forested area between state Highway 68 and Haul Road.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the man allegedly came up to her with a gun, led her to a tree, tied her up, and then walked away without hurting, robbing, or attacking her.
Before someone on the route discovered her, the woman had been there for around two hours. When someone else came by, the two untied her and dialed 911.
The suspect, according to the sheriff’s office, was a thirty-something Hispanic man in a grey sweater and green hat. The right side of his neck was tattooed with a word that started with the letter “z.”
Sheriff’s deputies, a Cal Fire drone crew, and security guards from Pebble Beach Resorts, which is around two miles south of the scene, unsuccessfully searched the area.
Following the event, staff at the nearby Stevenson School, a private school serving students in preschool through 12th grade, put the campus on lockdown after false rumors of an active shooter went viral online.
At its neighboring maintenance yard, the Pebble Beach Company, the owner of Pebble Beach Resorts, also issued a shelter-in-place order. However, according to the Sheriff’s Office, there was never an active shooter and no reports of gunfire related to the event.
A woman in black who was walking a big black dog was a possible witness, and the sheriff’s office needed assistance identifying her so they could interrogate her.
