Since the waves are predicted to reach just after noon, officials in Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo counties advised residents living near beaches and low-lying areas to evacuate and stay away from coastal areas.

The earthquake has affected BART service, including the closing of the Transbay Tube, in addition to the directives to avoid the coast.
The government said that service had been suspended in the tunnel that connects Oakland and San Francisco just before 11 a.m. A few minutes later, BART declared that the tube was still closed and that there was a “major delay” in all directions.
