Officials announced that the tsunami warning for the Northern California coast, which was triggered by a large earthquake that occurred in the ocean off Humboldt County on Thursday morning, has been withdrawn.

The earthquake occurred in the ocean west of the community of Petrolia at 10:44 p.m. with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0. A magnitude 5.8 aftershock that occurred in far northern Sonoma County a few minutes later is one of several aftershocks that have been registered.

A tsunami warning for a large portion of the coast, extending from the Bay Area northward into Oregon, was issued in response to the earthquake.

The U.S. National Tsunami alert Center declared the alert to be withdrawn at noon.

California and Oregon’s coastal regions are no longer under a tsunami warning. There is now no risk of tsunamis in this location. For this occurrence, this will be the last notification from the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center. For further details, see https://t.co/npoUHxX900.

Authorities in Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo counties issued warnings, advising residents near beaches and low-lying areas to evacuate and stay away from coastal areas.

The earthquake has affected Bay Area Rapid Transit service, including the closing of the Transbay Tube, in addition to the directives to avoid the coast.

The government said that service had been suspended in the tunnel that connects Oakland and San Francisco just before 11 a.m. A few minutes later, BART declared that the tube was still closed and that there was a “major delay” in all directions.

Just before noon, normal service was resumed along BART.
