A 21-year-old Minnesota resident has been arrested after allegedly threatening to target a synagogue in Minneapolis, prompting concern and heightened security measures.
The incident took place amid the Jewish community’s preparations for the New Year, an observance marked with religious significance and reflection.
On September 11, Temple Israel in Minneapolis reported to the Minneapolis Police Department that they had received multiple threatening phone calls.
The caller reportedly stated intentions to “shoot up” the synagogue, instilling fear among the community members.
Following these threats, the Minneapolis Police Department assigned special patrols to the area to ensure the safety of worshippers.
In a separate incident later that week, police were alerted to the presence of a man with a firearm outside the synagogue.
The suspect fled the scene upon the arrival of law enforcement but was apprehended the following day. Despite the alarming situation, authorities did not recover a weapon from the suspect.
During a press conference, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara addressed the community, emphasizing the department’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents, particularly during significant religious events.
“Everyone in Minneapolis has the right to feel safe in their communities, and we will ensure our Jewish neighbors are protected as they celebrate the holy days,” O’Hara stated.
Investigators revealed that the suspect used a phone application to disguise his voice while making the threats.
He has been taken into custody on charges of making “terroristic threats,” with the case now forwarded to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for further review.
Chief O’Hara also highlighted the broader context of increased security concerns within the community, referencing recent hateful incidents following the tragic events of October 7 in Israel.
“Since the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks, the worst terrorist attack on our Jewish community since the Holocaust, our police officers have been present where a whole lot of hateful rhetoric has been said against our residents, against members of our community, simply because they are Jewish,” O’Hara said.
While the motive behind the threats remains unclear, the timing of these actions raised concerns among law enforcement and community leaders.
The incident is being treated with the utmost seriousness as authorities work to ensure that places of worship in Minneapolis remain safe for everyone.
