According to prosecutors, a 29-year-old man was sentenced to 75 years in jail by a Texas judge for killing a 16-year-old girl who had just minutes earlier warned him off in a string of Facebook messages.

Prosecutors in Houston found 29-year-old Irbin Vargas guilty of murder on September 12, 2018, for the killing of 16-year-old Lourdes Sandoval, also known as Betty. Vargas, 22, and Betty had been dating for around a year, according to prosecutors from the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

But after Vargas allegedly put a gun to her head, Betty stated that she wanted to end the relationship.

The criminal complaint claims that at around 10 p.m. that evening, Vargas and the girl exchanged messages on Facebook.

Vargas seems to have sent the girl a photo of himself with a gun to his head a few minutes later, along with the message, “Life ain’t worth living without you.” Betty expressed her worry by sending a friend the image and the messages.

To meet a buddy, she headed outside. Prosecutors said that Vargas came out of the shadows, grabbed the girl’s shoulder, and shot her in the face.

Associated coverage:

Vargas escaped, but he was finally caught by Houston police. He was found guilty by a court last month after a five-day bench trial. It will be thirty years before he is eligible for parole.

According to Assistant District Attorney Philip White, who handled the case, he was a predator who was 22 years old and tried to approach a teenage girl. He killed her five minutes after she informed him it was forever over.

“This case is particularly tragic because this woman was so young and had so much to live for. We mourn her loss with her family,” said Kim Ogg, Harris County’s district attorney. “No one should ever lose their life to domestic violence.”
