David Gregory, the Republican state senator-elect from Missouri, has come under fire for putting out a plan that would encourage citizens who report illegal immigrants to law police with monetary incentives.
According to Fox 2 Now, Senate Bill 72, which was presented by Senator Gregory, aims to create an Illegal Alien Certified Bounty Hunter Program where Missourians can sign up as bounty hunters and get $1,000 for catching an undocumented immigrant.
Democratic State Senator Brian Williams of North St. Louis County stated that it currently appears that the public will not only be pointing fingers but could also face different types of discrimination. Missourians anticipate that we will solve problems rather than assign blame or exclude individuals from a public lineup.
Javad Khazaeli of the Khazaeli/Wyrsch company, a human rights lawyer, stated, “I don’t know how you do something like this without just stopping every brown person and demanding to see their papers.” He also referred to Gregory’s plan as unAmerican.
Later, he stated, “This is going to be a boon for someone like me who is a civil rights attorney.” When a Puerto Rican is tackled while strolling down the street, people will say, “We caught one,” not realizing that Puerto Ricans are Americans.
Plans to establish a new criminal charge known as trespass by an unlawful alien, which undocumented immigrants may face, were part of Sen. Gregory’s campaign, which was largely centered on securing the border between the United States and Mexico.
Gregory suggested that the maximum penalty for the offense be life in prison.
Gregory implored the gathering, “Let’s do this right to protect our people because immigration is good.” Illegal immigration is a negative thing.
According to a spokesperson for the International Institute of St. Louis, which assists migrants and refugees with their re-settlements, “the immigrants and refugees we work with have made our country more welcoming, healthy, and prosperous for everyone.”
