On Thursday, Juanita Caldwell received a heartbreaking phone call—something that no parent wants to experience. She was told by the staff at Potomac High School in Oxon Hill that her daughter Kayla, 14, had suffered a broken nose as a result of being viciously attacked by multiple girls.
She sobbed as she added, “I was furious and angry, and all I wanted to know was who had attacked my child.”
She claimed to have been appalled when she saw her kid in school.
She was crying and apologizing as her face was swelled and there was blood on her face, jacket, and shirt. Juanita cried out.
She simply kept saying, “I’m sorry, mom, and I don’t want to fight any more.”
A student’s cell phone footage of the alleged incident was obtained by WUSA9. Kayla was apparently struck in the head on the floor of a school utility closet.
According to Juanita, school staff told her that Kayla was attacked by a group of seven girls, purportedly as a result of a verbal fight that had been defused by teachers earlier in the day.
According to Juanita, the attack was so severe that her daughter laid on the closet floor for half an hour before a cheerleading coach found her.
She told me that she had to shake Kayla up after finding her unconscious on the floor while she was heading to the utility room to get something else.
Juanita tells us that she has started the process of bringing charges in Prince George’s County Circuit Court and has spoken with the county school superintendent. However, she is calling on authorities to make these kids answerable for their deeds.
She informed me that because they are youngsters, the law does not imprison them.
She thinks Kayla is still in shock as of Sunday night since she showed us the bruises on her face and the ruptured blood vessels in her left eye.
She sobbed, and it simply crushes my heart that I wasn’t there to protect her. Despite her apology, I felt as like I had let her down when I looked at her.
She claims that although Kayla loves her academics and the cheer squad, she is unsure if she will be able to go back to school.
I’m terrified. “I have no idea what’s going on, and I can’t imagine myself at work while my baby is at that school,” she said.
The Prince Georges County Police Department was contacted by WUSA9. Although there aren’t many tools available to get more information over the weekend, a spokesman affirms that a report was submitted to the department on December 5.
