On Sunday, charges were brought against a mother in Chevy Chase, Maryland, for the murder of her three-month-old child.

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue responded to a report of a baby drowning at a residence on the 7300 block of Summit Avenue in Chevy Chase at approximately 12:15 p.m. on Sunday.

They found a three-month-old victim when they got there, and they took the baby to the hospital, where they were later declared dead.

The 37-year-old Mackenzie R. Colgan was immediately taken into custody. She has been charged with first-degree murder, according to court filings.

Court documents state that Colgan informed her relatives that she would be giving the infant a bath. Twenty minutes later, she told John Volpe, the baby’s father, that the baby had passed away. Colgan called 911 while Volpe found the baby still in the bathtub and started CPR.

Investigators claim that Colgan said she woke up on Sunday morning intending to kill herself and her family in order to put an end to everything.

According to reports, Colgan told authorities that she intended to jump out of the second-story window after drowning the 3-month-old, but she walked downstairs to tell Volpe what had happened instead.
