An Iowa woman was imprisoned for allegedly abandoning her two young children in a burning apartment.

The North Liberty Fire Department was called to an apartment fire on Rachel Street at around 4:30 a.m. on November 11. No one else was harmed, although the fire took two others to a nearby hospital. Two children, ages three and five, were found to be alone in the second-floor apartment where the fire began.

Following an investigation, their mother, 29-year-old Brittany Airhart, was taken into custody and accused of mistreatment.

According to officials, the fire started in the apartment where the two children were left alone, according to KCRG, a local ABC affiliate. It seems that one of the children started a fire in the fireplace while a laundry basket was close by, which caused the fire to spread. By the time firemen arrived, building sprinklers had put out much of the fire, but it had progressed to the point where the entire building had to be evacuated.

The children and their dog were saved alive when firefighters found them in the bedroom of their flat. Although they were not hurt, the kids were also brought to the hospital.

According to reports, Airhart informed police during questioning that she believed a babysitter would visit her home to pick up the kids shortly after she left. Additionally, she acknowledged that she never checked in with the babysitter to make sure they were on their way.

Airhart faces up to ten years in jail for the charges of neglect or abandonment of a dependent person.
