In a letter to the president-elect’s attorney, New York Attorney General Letitia James stated that the $454 million civil fraud judgment against Donald Trump remains unaffected by his impending inauguration.
Over the course of ten years of business activities, a judge last year found that Trump and his adult sons repeatedly misrepresented Trump’s net worth in order to obtain better loan terms. They now owe roughly $490 million in their civil fraud lawsuit, plus interest. Trump has appealed.
James intended to continue defending her choice against Trump as he appealed the case, according to the letter. The reason for this is that civil lawsuits can still be filed against presidents.
The President’s official duties are not impeded by the typical strains of civil litigation in a manner that is detrimental to the United States.
Constitution, D. John Sauer, Trump’s choice for both solicitor general and appellate lawyer, received a letter from New York Deputy Solicitor General Judith Vale.
Sauer requested last month that James dismiss her civil complaint against Trump in order to mend partisan divisions and improve the state of our nation.
President Trump has called for an end to partisan warfare in the US and for the various parties to cooperate for the benefit of the nation since his historic election victory.
In reference to the recent rejection of Trump’s federal prosecutions for election involvement and classified document leaks, Sauer stated, “This call for unity includes the wave of lawsuits against him and his family during the last election cycle.”
According to Vale’s letter, the motion was denied because your argument that Mr. Trump’s formal presidential duties will be hampered by the defendant’s own appeal’s pending status is without substance.
James can continue to work on the New York attorney general’s case even after Trump assumes office since it is a civil issue.
Accordingly, Vale wrote, the different steps taken by the New York County District Attorney’s Office or the Special Counsel’s office in the corresponding criminal proceedings brought by those agencies against Mr. Trump are not relevant here.
The judge could decide on Trump’s appeal of the ruling at any point.
