Prosecutors in Monterey County said Thursday that a man who attacked and killed another man at a King City Motel 6 in 2022 with an axe while under the influence of meth was found guilty of first-degree murder.
According to the county district attorney’s office, Kevin Powell went on trial for the attack that took place on September 14, 2022, at a Motel 6 where the victim and his brother were lodging.
Powell, whom they did not know, parked his car close to them while they were standing outside their motel room, chatting after returning from supper at their sister’s place. According to the prosecution, he then exited his vehicle, took out a 3-foot axe, and used it to assault them.
The other brother stumbled and was seriously hurt in the axe attack; he eventually passed away in a hospital, while the other brother fled and was just slightly hurt. According to the District Attorney’s Office, Powell claimed in court that he attacked the two while in a methamphetamine-induced psychosis.
He was found guilty of first-degree murder and attempted murder by a Monterey County Superior Court jury. In addition, he was previously convicted of street terrorism. According to prosecutors, he might receive a life sentence in jail when he is sentenced on January 9.
