A tornado warning woke up inhabitants of San Francisco early Saturday morning as a strong storm system pounded the area with wind and rain.

Just before six in the morning, the National Weather Service issued a warning for portions of downtown San Francisco and northern San Mateo County.

The NWS reported that a cyclonic signature on the radar had generated a sufficient rotation signature to trigger the warning.

Update on Radar [9:40 AM] Radar shows an impressive cyclonic signature currently sweeping across the North Bay. Because of this larger-scale feature, there was sufficient forcing to create the rotation signature that led to the tornado warning at 5:51 AM. The threat posed by Tornado has been eliminated.

When the storm moved northeast of downtown San Francisco, the warning was lifted at 6:07 a.m. At 6:20 a.m., the warning for the remainder of the region ended.

Residents who were awakened by the alert on their cell phones posted a flurry of information on social media. The tornado warning was reportedly the first to ever be issued for San Francisco.

Additionally, ten minutes after the tornado warning ended, a special notice was issued for a potential water spout in San Francisco Bay near the Bay Bridge.

Until 6:30 AM PST, the San Francisco Bay north of the Bay Bridge, the West Delta, Suisun Bay, and San Pablo Bay are all under a special marine warning.Twitter: pic.twitter.com/5sATFgWa0K
