SAN FRANCISCO — A man who tried to rob a client in San Francisco’s Mission District was taken to the ground by a cafe employee, and he is now in jail.

Some people are referring to the man as a hero for what happened at Carlin’s Cafe in the Mission District early on Friday morning.

Just after 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, the entire incident was captured on security footage.

When the masked man entered, Nick Grant was behind the counter. He immediately went for a customer’s backpack, and Grant acted quickly.

“I realized he was in a situation where he needed help,” said Grant.

The two shortly got into a heated argument, and the masked man sprayed Grant with bear mace.

“I’m still feeling breathing problems to this day,” Grant stated.

He suffered facial and arm injuries, and the mace affected his vision.

Jim Carroll was strolling to the gym with his wife just prior to the attempted robbery.

He was afraid they were about to be robbed when he observed a man wearing black clothes and a mask, but the man continued to move.

His wife alerted Carroll to the occurrence in the cafe after turning around and witnessing it.

Carroll remarked, “I ran towards the restaurant without even thinking.”

He can be seen running in the door and attempting to assist Grant right away in the footage.

“While I was speaking with 911, I attempted to evaluate the circumstances and determine who the robber was. After identifying it, I wrapped my arm around his neck,” Carroll remarked.

After then, Grant restrained the guy for around six minutes while he awaited the arrival of the police.

The culprit was identified by the police as Concord resident Amir Moner, 42. Due to the incident and other outstanding out-of-county warrants, he was taken to San Francisco County Jail and booked.

Grant and Carroll are thankful that everyone is safe and that they have formed new connections in spite of the potentially disastrous circumstance.

“The owner, Matt, is a great guy, and I feel like I have a new connection to my neighborhood. And the true hero is Nick. I simply stepped in to assist. The hero is him,” Carroll declared.

Following the attempted robbery, the cafe was closed for cleanup, but it has since resumed regular business hours.
