Republicans are waging a war on democracy and fairness. Their NC move demonstrates it. | Opinion

Sharing is caring!

Republicans’ battle for democracy and justice at the state, local, and federal levels is best shown by the North Carolina legislature’s decision to abdicate its traditional duties from incoming Governor Josh Stein and Attorney General Jeff Jackson.

The Republican Party has shown a dedication to infringing on the rights, privileges, and dignity of American citizens, from Jefferson Griffin’s demand that 60,000 votes (Democratic and Republican) for state Supreme Court justice be challenged without cause to Donald Trump’s outspoken declaration that he will ignore the Constitution’s guarantee of birthright citizenship.

Did the electorate vote for this?

Thanks IRA

Great news at last. Starting next year, the Inflation Reduction Act will limit my annual prescription expenses to $2,000.

I have type 2 diabetes and rare blood malignancy. The essential medications I need to survive are somewhat costly. I’ve been putting off a well-earned retirement for years since my out-of-pocket costs have increased to over $18,000 a month. I’ve occasionally had to limit my medication due to the high cost of prescription drugs. I have to take on multiple occupations at the age of 72 in order to pay for them.

I might be able to work part-time or retire because of the $2,000 out-of-pocket cap. It will let me regain some of my independence and spend more time with my family. It significantly affects your life.

Shameful GOP

Sadly, the newly elected Democrats’ responsibilities were relocated to the positions they could occupy by the Republican-controlled NC General Assembly. Consequently, the Republicans ignored the electorate and essentially threw out their options. This conduct runs against to all of the morals and values that we were taught in public schools and by our parents. Did your parents not teach you to respect other people and play fairly?

No Biden fan

Thank you for the fantastic editorial. Those who support the rule of law are betrayed by Joe Biden’s pardon of his son. President Biden has now solidified his position alongside Andrew Johnson as one of our nation’s least admired presidents, starting with his administration’s incompetent 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan and concluding with his cynical, unprincipled pardon of his son Hunter despite his repeated assurances that he would never do so. Hillary Clinton described him as “just deplorable.”

Democracy dies

Disaster Relief SB 382 will be disastrous for WNC and will lead to North Carolina’s democracy dying.

Relief is being delayed by this phony bill, which was drafted behind closed doors by a few bitter losers and passed without due process. The majority of the legislation aims to implement large changes to the State Board of Elections’ structure, the ballot counting procedure, and other extensive reforms in the judicial and administrative branches.

It surprises me as a nonpartisan local activist that one party completely forsake the democratic process to grab undeserved power against the wishes of our people. Democracy dies in silence.

No New Nukes

The Nobel Peace Prize was given to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese nuclear abolitionist organization made up of survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic blasts in 1945. One could wonder why now after running for office for a number of years.

Given the state of the world today, Jorgen Frydnes, the head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, may have expressed the reason. Humanity and nuclear weapons cannot coexist.

We should also recognize the wisdom of the U.S. Congress’s Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control Working Group, which has put forth a resolution to reconsider the use of the newest intercontinental ballistic missile system, the Sentinel. Numerous retired high-ranking military officers think this system will simply make matters worse, and it is already far over budget.
