What s New

A massive drone that seemed to have been abandoned at the Brooklyn Navy Yard has been recovered by police.

An NYPD officer is seen holding up the enormous aircraft, which appears to have a diameter of more than five feet, in a photo that the New York Post was able to secure. The drone was made by energy company Amogy, Inc. and placed on the sidewalk outside its headquarters one month ago, according to the company.

Why It Matters

The drone was seized by the NYPD in the midst of a spike in drone activity reports in New Jersey and New York in recent weeks.

Since state and local officials are unable to help and federal officials have not offered many explanations, people are growing more and more alarmed about the sightings. This has generated a lot of debate among the general public, experts, and legislators, with some turning to absurd conspiracy theories to try to explain the phenomenon.

Newsweek emailed Amogy Inc. and the NYPD to request comment.

What To Know

The drone was found on the pavement on Fifth Street between Market Street and Morris Avenue after police responded to an email tip, the Post reported.

Investigators learned from a bystander that he was employed at the headquarters of the sustainable energy company Amogy, Inc., which manufactures drones.

Later, Amogy CEO Seonghoon Woo confirmed to the Post that the drone was really the company’s property and that it had been abandoned on the sidewalk after a party held about a month prior.

According to an Amogy spokesperson who spoke to the Post, the drone has been on display outside the company’s offices since it was utilized in a sustainable energy demonstration three years ago.

For a brief period, the NYPD took possession of it. According to the spokeswoman, Amogy cooperated completely with the NYPD, and after the agency determined the drone posed no threat, it was given back to the company.

Even while the speaker claimed that the drone posed no threat, the news account @rawsalerts uploaded a video of the officers holding it to X. By Tuesday morning, the video had 3.7 million views, and many users were skeptical of the official explanation.

What People Are Saying About Drones

During a briefing, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Counterterrorism and Intelligence Rebecca Weiner said: To be honest, the drone activity we observe on a daily basis has been very consistent over the past few days across the city. Reports have significantly increased, but drone detection has not.

which makes sense since all that people see on the news are reports of drone sightings everywhere.

“The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI are investigating these sightings, and they’re working closely with state and local law enforcement to provide resources, using numerous detection methods to better understand their origin,” said White House National Security Communications adviser John Kirby during a press briefing.

“I think the government would be better off admitting what it is,” President-elect Donald Trump told reporters at Mar-a-Lago. Our president and military are aware, and they like to keep people guessing for some reason.
