A North Carolina Mega Millions player earned a sizable sum despite coming very near to winning the grand prize.

All but one of the numbers selected in the drawing on December 17 were matched by the ticket the player bought. The results showed that after buying an extra dollar on the Megaplier option, the person’s $1 million prize grew to $4 million.

White balls 56-66-67-68-69 and gold Mega Ball 18 are the winning numbers.

Where did they sell the lucky ticket, then? It was bought online by the player.

Statesville is roughly 40 miles north of Charlotte, according to an email from a North Carolina Education Lottery staffer to McClatchy News.

Since the winner’s $3 ticket matched all five white balls, they will soon become even wealthier. According to the Mega Millions website, the individual was also just one number away from taking home the larger jackpot reward, which is projected to be $760 million.

On the night of the drawing, the $4 million prize was the largest payout in the nation because no one won the jackpot. The game’s press release states that the Mega Millions prize has now grown to $825 million.
