Due to wins by Washington and the Los Angeles Rams, the 49ers, the reigning NFC champions, were eliminated from the playoffs before their game against Miami on Sunday ever started.

After losing the last Super Bowl, the 49ers became the 16th team to miss the postseason. On February 11, they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 25–22 in Super Bowl 58.

The Niners missed the playoffs the following season after losing to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl and winning the NFC in 2019.

The Rams’ victory against the New York Jets destroyed the Niners’ aspirations of winning the NFC West, and the Commanders’ victory over the Philadelphia Eagles removed San Francisco from wild-card contention. Due to their season sweep, the Rams have the advantage against the Niners in the tiebreaker.

At halftime on Sunday, the 49ers were behind the Dolphins 13–10.

The early results on Sunday eliminated the New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys from playoff contention in addition to the Niners. The Cowboys were eliminated by the Commanders’ victory, and the Atlanta Falcons defeated the New York Giants to remove the Saints.

After losing at Carolina, the Arizona Cardinals were eliminated.

The Dolphins needed to defeat the 49ers in the AFC to maintain their hopes of making the playoffs.
