The Brewster Ranch was listed for $320 million in 2020, but the State of Texas recently paid $164.6 million for it.

Prior to the state closing the sale, the price was lowered to $245 million after first dropping to $268 million in 2023.

Despite mentioning possible uses including border security, defense against foreign enemies, and the use of natural resources to finance education, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham has kept the purchase of the 424,000-acre Brewster Ranch under wraps.

The property’s topography will make it unsuitable for detaining migrants.

One of Texas’ largest public land purchases, the Brewster Ranch purchase strengthened the state’s control over the Chihuahuan Desert and generated long-term income.

James King of King Land & Water said that the Texas General Land Office’s acquisition of the Brewster Ranch was one of the most important public land transactions in Texas history, according to Chron and MySA.

The 28-ranch Brewster Ranch features a variety of landscapes, such as mountains, rivers, and deserts. While Tesnus Ranch is still available, other portions, like Horse Mountain Ranch, have been sold.

Buckingham plans to use the land to support education and protect Texas’ border. It is a sanctuary for around 1.25 million acres of Chihuahuan Desert, according to MySA.
