Parents Turn to Direct Payments as Daycare Owner Faces Financial and Legal Problems!

In a recent turn of events at Franklin Springs Academy in Middle Tennessee, parents have resorted to directly sending money to daycare workers via Venmo after continued issues with late paychecks from the owner.

This alternative approach emerged as a way to ensure employees get paid on time after several workers reported delayed payments and even went on strike to protest these payroll problems.

Parents like Jenny Montani, whose children attend Franklin Springs Academy, were asked by the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) to stop using the standard tuition payment method.

Instead, they were encouraged to send their payments straight to the daycare director through Venmo.

This move was made to prevent funds from reaching the hands of the daycare’s owner, Rebekah Proctor, who has been linked to ongoing financial mismanagement.

More than ten families are now bypassing the owner and directly supporting the daycare staff through these payments.

Montani explained that when she confronted Proctor about the payment delays, Proctor responded that she was waiting on checks to clear for things like leased furniture and electricity.

However, for concerned parents and staff, this explanation did little to ease their worries.

Former employees from another now-closed daycare location owned by Proctor, Chapel Hill, had also experienced similar issues, with paychecks bouncing and being delayed. The financial troubles don’t end there.

A deeper investigation by WSMV 4 revealed that Proctor is facing legal battles related to her misuse of funds, including accusations of using Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) money for personal expenses rather than for the daycare.

Proctor has been indicted on 20 federal charges, with claims that she failed to properly handle and pay over employee payroll taxes to the IRS.

These charges add a significant legal burden to the daycare owner’s already troubled business operations.

Adding to the turmoil, Proctor’s husband, Corey Proctor, was arrested on charges of incest and rape, which further damaged the reputation of Franklin Springs Academy.

The District Attorney’s office clarified that the charges involve someone aged between 13 and 18.

In response to these criminal charges, Rebekah Proctor stated that her husband would not be allowed near the daycare facilities after his release.

However, despite these claims, parents reported that Corey Proctor was spotted parking in the daycare’s parking lot after his release, adding to the discomfort and mistrust among parents.

The situation at Franklin Springs Academy has not only impacted the daycare’s reputation but also its enrollment numbers, as many parents chose to pull their children out of the daycare following the controversy surrounding the owner and her husband.

For now, families are continuing to directly pay the daycare staff to ensure their children are cared for, but the uncertainty surrounding the future of Franklin Springs Academy remains.

Proctor’s legal troubles and the fallout from her husband’s criminal case have left a once-trusted childcare facility in disarray.
