OAKLAND On Monday, Oakland’s first city council meeting kicks off a hectic year for the city’s politics.

A new interim mayor will be chosen, three new city council members will be sworn in, and the council may decide to choose a candidate for the vacant District 2 councilmember post.

Former District 6 representative Loren Taylor is now a member of the council. He claims that years of poor management have culminated in the current problems.

“The challenges we’re facing now are unprecedented, even though they’ve been years and administrations in the making they have reached a boiling point,” Loren stated.

There is no way left, he claims, because leaders have kicked the can down the road.

“We have to make those tough decisions that put Oakland back on the right track both fiscally and when you look at our public safety crisis, homelessness, the conditions of our streets,” Loren stated.

The council will first vote for the city council president, who will act as interim mayor until a special election is held in April to choose a new mayor, so they won’t be able to concentrate on that right away.

“I think future academic studies in urban politics will look at what happened here in terms of the recall election in Oakland, California, in 2024/2025, and its unintended consequences,” James Taylor, a professor of politics at the University of San Francisco, stated.

According to him, recall elections are more frequent than ever before, regardless of party affiliation, but many don’t consider what will happen after the election.

After voters recalled Mayor Sheng Thao, the Oakland City Council proclaimed the position vacant in December. Nikki Fortunato Bas, the president of the city council, was appointed interim mayor. However, Fortunato Bas is leaving her position on the council after being elected to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors.

James remarked, “We’ve had too many mayors,” “If you have two quarterbacks in football, you have none,” goes the saying. Oakland hasn’t had a mayor because they’ve had four in the last four years.

Oakland is already accepting names for the mayorship and the District 2 council seat that Bas left vacant.

It is expected that the nomination period will end on January 17.

Loren Taylor has already submitted his nomination papers and is to run for mayor once more. In 2022, he was defeated by Sheng Thao.

“My commitment was just as strong as it was two years ago to make sure that we are delivering for Oakland residents, to make sure city government fulfills its promises,” Loren stated.

While the top leadership position is still up for grabs, Loren hopes the city council can maintain focus and start implementing changes in the coming months.

“Embrace these challenges but commit to solving them not just immediate firefighting but actually creating some sustained change to make sure that Oakland delivers,” he stated.

The city of Oakland has declared that a special election for the mayor and District 2 council seats is scheduled for April 15.

The elected officials will serve their positions for the remainder of their existing mandates, which expire on January 4, 2027.
