According to San Jose locals, parked RVs have clogged several roadways. A new initiative seeks to remove the RVs by designating specific areas as temporary tow-away zones.
RVs have taken over San Jose’s Chynoweth Street, according to Omar Solares. He sees roughly 20 parked cars every day in the neighborhood across the street where he lives.
“In front of my home, there is one RV, has seven cars that they leave junk in front of, that my neighbors and I literally walk out every morning, and we pick up all of their junk,” Solares stated.
The mayor’s office has launched a new pilot initiative in Chynoweth aimed at relocating and evicting RV residents. Thirty places with a high number of RV parking will be transformed into temporary tow-away zones as part of the OLIVE program.
The first zone chosen for the initiative is Chynoweth. Solares hopes it will have an impact.
“We’ve had enough of this. “We’re sick and we have kids,” Solares said to CBS News Bay Area.
According to a mayor’s spokeswoman, the tow-away procedure will take place in three stages over the course of six weeks. Establishing streets as temporary zones is the first stage; talking to RV residents is the next; and finally, towing them away is the last step.
Before the last stage, a secure parking area or housing information will be made available to everyone.
The scheme sounded wonderful on paper, but Lori Smith, who also lives close to Chynoweth, expressed concerns about how it would be implemented.
“Yay from a cosmetic standpoint. However, the initiative won’t be particularly successful if the locals don’t use such services and instead look for another parking spot,” Smith added.
Up to 85 parking spaces are reportedly available at the next secure parking location on Berryessa.
