Kohl’s, a retail department store company, said Thursday that it would close 27 locations in 2025, with 10 of the closures occurring in California and 17 in other states.
In addition, Kohl’s announced that it was closing one of its e-commerce fulfillment centers in San Bernardino, California, due to the enhanced capacity to fulfill online orders from store locations and the increased efficiency at newer fulfillment centers. Half of the ten retail establishments in California that are scheduled to close are located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Wisconsin-based retailer stated in a press release on Thursday that it will be closing 27 stores, adding, “While Kohl’s continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base, these specific locations were underperforming stores.” After the closures, Kohl’s stated that it will still have over 1,100 locations nationwide.
According to Kohl’s, all impacted employees have been notified of the closures and given the option to apply for other open positions within the company or receive a severance payout.
“We always take these decisions very seriously,” stated Tom Kingsbury, the CEO of Kohl’s, in a text message. “As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”
According to a report by analytics firm CoreSight, U.S. retailers announced over 7,100 store closures in November 2024, a 69% increase from the previous year. Despite high consumer spending, the research indicated that 45 stores filed for bankruptcy protection through November 2024, compared to 25 retail bankruptcies for the entire year 2023.
Target, Family Dollar, and CVS Health are among the chains that have closed the most, even as competitors like Walmart have managed to attract customers who are struggling financially.
The San Bernardino fulfillment center will close in May 2025 when its contract expires, while the Kohl’s stores mentioned below are scheduled to close by April 2025.
