Oakland police reported Monday that a 15-year-old has been arrested in relation to the shooting death of a man the day after Christmas.

The Oakland Police Department said in a social media news release on Monday afternoon that the young suspect was taken into custody in relation to Ponciano “Chano” Tule Bernal’s murder on December 26 of last year in the 1100 block of Foothill Blvd.

At approximately 4:15 p.m. on the day of the incident, police arrived at the Foothill Blvd. vicinity to look into a ShotSpotter activation. Tule Bernal was discovered by arriving authorities with at least one gunshot wound. Despite the fact that paramedics were called to the scene, the victim was declared dead.

Reports state that the 48-year-old victim was shot after he confronted three adolescents from Oakland who were accused of stealing a scooter from Tule Bernal’s 14-year-old son. According to media accounts, the arrest occurred during the first week of January, but authorities did not specify when the allegedly male juvenile suspect was taken into custody.

According to authorities, the juvenile suspect has been charged by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for their role in the crime.

Police stated that the shooting is still being investigated. The OPD Homicide Section can be reached at (510)238-3821 if you have any information concerning the case. It is requested that anyone with images or videos that could help with the investigation submit them to [email protected].
