As Halloween approaches, many people decorate their homes with spooky items to set the mood. However, it’s important to keep in mind that some of these decorations can be dangerous for pets and wildlife.

The Calaveras Humane Society (CHS) warns people about the hazards these items may pose, especially synthetic spiderwebs.

Outdoor decorations, like fake spiderwebs, can become traps for birds and other small animals. An owl recently got tangled in one of these synthetic webs and had to be rescued.

Thankfully, the owl recovered, but the CHS urges caution to avoid such incidents. Indoors, these fake webs can also be harmful if pets like dogs or cats chew or swallow them.

Another common Halloween figure is the black cat, which often becomes a hot topic this time of year.

Social media buzzes with warnings about adopting black cats near Halloween due to myths about them being harmed or used in rituals.

But CHS addresses these fears by saying they’re unfounded. According to a 2007 article by National Geographic, there is no actual evidence to back up claims that black cats are targeted more during Halloween.

Experts who study Halloween and the occult have found no real data, statistics, or court cases proving that black cats face more danger around this time.

In reality, CHS states there’s no proof animal abuse increases during Halloween. They challenge people to research it themselves.

While stories and urban legends about black cats persist, CHS emphasizes that no verified cases of harm have been recorded.

Unfortunately, black cats do face other struggles. They tend to stay in shelters longer than cats of other colors.

Animal welfare groups like the ASPCA, the Humane Society of the United States, and Best Friends Animal Society all support black cat adoptions, not just during Halloween but all year long.

CHS encourages those interested in adopting to give these cats a chance, assuring they are wonderful pets regardless of the season.
