Following his swearing-in on Monday, President-elect Donald Trump is anticipated to sign executive orders at the US Capitol. Later in the afternoon, he is expected to sign more at Capital One Arena, where the inaugural parade and entertainment were rescheduled because of the cold weather in Washington.
Top Trump officials separately told ABC News that on his first day in office, he intends to launch more than 200 executive orders.
Under what they are referring to as an omnibus executive action, Trump’s advisors hope he will be able to sign several executive orders simultaneously.
In essence, Trump would sign a single document that would combine several activities, saving him from having to sign dozens of documents individually.
During his rally on Sunday, Trump assured his supporters, “You will see executive orders that will make you very happy.” A large number of them exist. We must put our nation on the correct course.
Trump’s new deputy chief of staff for policy, Stephen Miller, briefed a small group of Republicans on Sunday afternoon.
Miller gave the group a number of executive orders and pronouncements, but sources warned that plans were still being worked out.
According to the sources, they consist of the following:
- Declaring a national emergency on the U.S.-Mexico border
- Rescinding any DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) or gender-related directives from the Biden administration
- Designate cartels as foreign terrorist organizations
- Repeal rules on electric vehicles (which Trump to ABC News in an interview on Saturday)
- Offset limits for offshore drilling on federal land
According to the sources, Miller also listed more steps Trump intends to take, but it’s unclear how much of this will take place on Day 1.
- Order troops to help build more infrastructure at the border
- Relaunch the Remain in Mexico policy
- Declare a national emergency related to energy
Executive action to end Green New Deal programs has also been discussed by advisers.
