As the most recent setback to downtown retail in the city, Bloomingdale’s announced on Tuesday that it is closing its location in the faltering San Francisco Centre mall.
After 20 years in the city, a company representative told CBS News Bay Area that the Market Street location will close in the late spring.
“We are hopeful to be back to serve the San Francisco community in the future and look forward to introducing new ways to provide enhanced service to our loyal local shoppers,” a spokeswoman stated.
In the last two years, several significant tenants have left the mall, which was once known as Westfield San Francisco Centre.
The mall’s biggest retailer, Nordstrom, shut down both its namesake store and its outlet store next door in 2023. Cinemark quickly shut down their mall theater.
Eventually, Westfield’s parent company and its partner stopped paying the $558 million loan on the property, and the lender took over administration of the shopping center.
The Bloomingdale’s locations in San Jose’s Westfield Valley Fair mall and Stanford Shopping Center will stay open.
