An executive order requiring the release of documents pertaining to the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr., Robert F. Kennedy, and John F. Kennedy was signed by President Donald Trump on Thursday.
That’s a big one. As he signed the executive order in the Oval Office, Trump stated that many people had been waiting for this for years or even decades.
He instructed that the pen he used to sign the directive be given to his choice to head the Department of Health and Human Services, RFK Jr., who is the late president’s nephew and the son of the previous attorney general.
“Everything will be exposed,” Trump said.
Numerous JFK assassination-related papers have already been made public, including 13,000 documents that were made public during the Biden administration. Many records have been censored, though.
The American people and their families deserve openness and truth. “It is in the national interest to release all records related to these assassinations without delay,” the White House order states.
The records won’t be made available right away. The document states that within 15 days of the date of this order, the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence, in consultation with the President’s Counsel and the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, must submit to the President a plan for the full and comprehensive release of documents pertaining to President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.
The deadline for the MLK and RFK files is forty-five days.
According to CNN, 99% of the secret materials pertaining to JFK’s 1963 assassination were made public after the National Archives finished reviewing them in 2023.
Then, in a memo, President Joe Biden attested that the archivist had finished the study and that the remaining records that were approved for declassification had been made public by the predetermined deadline.
The CIA, Pentagon, and State Department still withhold documents, despite prior promises by administrations, including Trump, to make the records public.
Efforts to safeguard the identity of confidential sources who are still alive or may be living, along with protective measures, are the main reasons for maintaining those papers classified.
At the request of national security agencies, Trump agreed throughout his presidency to withhold the release of the full set of documents pertaining to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. However, Trump promised to make the remaining materials public during the 2024 campaign trail.
