According to authorities, a woman who is suspected of assaulting two people on a San Francisco Muni bus has been charged with several offenses, including hate crimes.
Akiah Brewster, 33, showed up in court Thursday, according to a statement released by District Attorney Brooke Jenkins on Friday. Brewster was accused of using a deadly weapon and causing serious physical harm to a public transportation employee or passenger, leading to charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
According to Jenkins, she was also accused of a hate crime and violence.
Jenkins stated in a statement on Friday that “hatred and violence have no place in our community.” “Attacks like this shake entire communities and dehumanize and degrade individuals. My office will make sure that there is responsibility in this matter since we take cases like this seriously.”
The criminal complaint claims that Brewster used a glass bottle to attack a bus rider. Then, while yelling anti-Latino slurs, she allegedly assaulted another traveler.
Brewster entered a not guilty plea to all charges during the arraignment on Thursday. Citing a risk to public safety, the judge approved the prosecution’s motion to have Brewster held pending trial.
Brewster is still being held without being granted bail. On February 5, she will appear in court for a preliminary hearing.
San Francisco police are asking anyone with more information on the crime to call them at 415-575-4444 or text TIP411, starting the message with “SFPD.”
