A report claims that President Trump gave his approval for Israeli soldiers to receive thousands of 2,000-pound bombs.
Up to 1,800 MK-84 bombs will be sent to Israel in the next few days, Israeli sources told Axios, lifting a ban on the explosives supply imposed by the Biden administration.
The day before Hamas freed four hostages under the cease-fire deal, the Pentagon apparently told the Israeli authorities of the release on Friday.
The enormous bombs have been in storage since May, when Biden opted to delay delivery because he was worried that Israel would deploy the weapons on heavily populated areas of Gaza and cause tremendous civilian destruction.
Over 10,000 of the bombs, referred to as bunker busters because they can go deep below before detonating, were sent to Israel by the US throughout the war.
The US relationship with Israel was severely strained as a result of the pause.
The announcement was made a few days after Mike Herzog, the departing Israeli ambassador to the US, stated that he anticipated Trump lifting the ban in his first few days in office.
Herzog informed the audience that he believes Trump will disclose the munitions that the Biden administration hasn’t yet released at the start of his term.
The Post’s request for comment was not immediately answered by the White House.
