Brant Boyer, a former New York Jets coordinator, was recruited by the San Francisco 49ers on Monday to lead the team’s special teams.

The action follows the team’s early-month firing of special teams coach Brian Schneider. A year after winning the Super Bowl, the 49ers had a particularly poor season on special teams, finishing with a 6-11 record and missing the playoffs. The Niners placed near the bottom of almost every efficiency metric related to the kicking game and lowest in the league in terms of predicted points added on special teams.

Boyer, 53, joins San Francisco after serving as the New York Jets’ special teams coordinator for nine seasons. Boyer oversaw a special teams unit that finished tied for second in total touchdowns (nine), second in blocked punts (eight), tied for sixth in special teams points scored (63) and opponent kickoff return average (21.8) throughout his time with the team from 2016 to the previous campaign.

Under his direction, three players (CB Justin Hardee in 2023, Roberts in 2019, and K Jason Myers in 2019) made it to the Pro Bowl, and two players (WR Braxton Berrios in 2022 and WR Andre Roberts in 2018) were named to the Associated Press First-Team All-Pro as kick returners.

Boyer served as the Indianapolis Colts’ assistant special teams coach for four seasons beginning in 2012 before joining the Jets.

Regarding his NFL career, Boyer was first selected by the Miami Dolphins in the sixth round (177th overall) of the 1994 NFL Draft. Boyer played linebacker and special teams for the Jacksonville Jaguars (1995–2000) and the Cleveland Browns (2001–04) following his first season in Miami.
