WashingtonPresident Donald Trump took a step toward keeping his campaign pledge to prohibit gender-affirming care for youngsters when he issued an executive order on Tuesday, ordering the federal government to refrain from helping individuals under the age of 19 with gender changes.
Since taking office last week, Trump has rescinded transgender rights through executive action. In a ruling on Tuesday, the federal government was barred from providing financial support or aid to minors for the purchase of sex hormones, puberty blockers, or surgery.
Plans run by Medicaid, Medicare, and TRICARE—the healthcare program for military members and their families—as well as federal employee health care plans are covered by the directive.
Donald Trump tweeted, “The United States will strictly enforce all laws that forbid or restrict these harmful and life-altering procedures, and it will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support the so-called transition of a child from one sex to another.”
Trump directed the government to issue a 90-day evaluation of best practices for advancing the health of transgender youngsters and to withdraw the Biden administration’s recommendations on gender-affirming care.
In 2026, he said, federal employees should only have access to health insurance that fulfill the new requirements, and he instructed his administration to work with Congress to enact legislation that would give parents and children the right to sue if they got gender-affirming care.
Additionally, Trump ordered the DOJ to focus its investigations and take action against states that help deprive parents of custody when they want to stop their child from receiving transgender care.
Last year, the Biden administration became involved in a Supreme Court lawsuit over limitations on gender-affirming care for children.
During oral arguments in December, a group of attorneys from the Department of Justice contested Tennessee’s ban. The Trump administration has the option to back out of the action before the court renders a verdict.
Without specifically addressing the Tennessee case, Trump’s directive on Tuesday instructed the Department of Justice to give enforcement of laws against female genital mutilation a priority.
Trump pledged to halt the emotional, physical, and chemical mutilation of our children when he ran for office. His executive directives since assuming office have declared male and female the only sexes recognized by the federal government and banned transgender troops from serving.
Liberal advocacy organizations rejected Trump’s directive on Tuesday to provide transgender care for kids and teens. In a statement, Cait Smith, the Center for American Progress’s director of LGBTQI+ policy, chastised Trump for deciding on health insurance for transgender children and their families.
All of us desire the autonomy to choose our own doctors under the supervision of reliable medical experts.
Smith said that today’s Executive Order is denying doctors and families the freedom to make their own medical decisions, which is a continuation of the same strategy that MAGA Republican lawmakers and judges used to meddle with women’s reproductive health care.
Senior lawyer Matt Sharp of the conservative Alliance Defending Freedom hailed Trump’s decision as a welcome return to sanity.
Mr. Sharp praised President Trump for keeping his word to American families and for taking these important actions to shield kids from dangerous, untested, and frequently irreversible medical treatments.
