After allegedly molesting a Berkeley High School student a block from campus the day before, Berkeley police detained a suspect on Thursday for sexual battery, according to authorities.
A press release from the Berkeley Police Department’s Facebook page claims that the suspect sexually assaulted the female Berkeley High School student in Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park on Wednesday. According to the police, the suspect confronted the victim while she was out on the sidewalk and touched her improperly.
After the event, Berkeley police connected the victim with resources, provided support, and launched an investigation. Berkeley police were able to identify the suspect as a 41-year-old man after consulting with Berkeley High authorities and the department’s school resource officer.
The subject was safely taken into custody by detectives and Berkeley police bike patrol units at approximately noon on Thursday.
“Crimes like this affect not only the victim but also other students and the community as a whole,” the statement on Facebook stated. “We appreciate the swift actions of our officers in this case.”
