Early Monday morning, a fire broke out at a Berkeley home, sending four people to the hospital, according to firemen.
Around 4:35 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a residence in West Berkeley close to 10th and Cedar streets, according to Fire Chief David Sprague. Within three minutes, crews were able to reach the house, which was roughly a block from a fire station.
The house was still burning when the crews got there. One of the residents was saved by firefighters breaking a window, while three more were saved in another area of the house.
According to Sprague, two of the rescued individuals were admitted to the hospital in severe condition, while two more were moderately injured.
The fire was swiftly brought under control by firefighters. As of 6 a.m., crews were still on the site.
“This is what we train for, they went immediately into rescue mode, all in is what we say, everyone was focused on getting those people out,” said Sprague.
It was not immediately clear what caused the fire.
