The U.S. Department of Justice said Monday that a San Jose man had been charged with robbing and abusing a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service last year.

Due to an event that occurred on November 22, 2024, Robert Cordova, also known as Robert Cordona, was charged with one count of robbing a mail carrier and one count of assaulting a letter carrier.

Prosecutors claim that a letter carrier in San Jose was sorting packages for delivery at the back of his mail truck near Taylor and 13th streets when he sensed the truck moving. According to reports, the letter carrier spotted Cordova with his upper torso inside the vehicle when he peered around the side.

In a DOJ press release, prosecutors said that “the letter carrier walked up to Cordova and asked what he was doing.” According to reports, Cordova exited the truck, turned around, and struck the letter carrier in the face. After that, Cordova is accused of dragging the letter carrier to the ground, repeatedly punching the carrier in the head and face, and attempting to gouge the carrier’s eyes.

After being brought to the hospital, the mail carrier was found to have a cracked left orbital socket and a broken nose.

According to prosecutors, Cordova was discovered by San Jose Police Department officers in the backyard of a home near the scene of the alleged crime.

Cordova’s next court date is a detention hearing on February 6, 2025. According to the DOJ, he may be sentenced to a maximum of 25 years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000.
