When Texas Red, the evil criminal, wreaks havoc on the good residents of the town in Marty Robbins’ Western ballad, Big Iron, it’s easy to recall what occurs.
With the large iron on his hip, the law, dressed as an Arizona Ranger, rides in.As justice prevails over lawlessness, Texas Red finds himself face down in the dust of Main Street at high noon, having never cleared leather.
The Western firefight between the police and the criminals in the street is a thing of the past. However, it is safe to say that many of the good citizens are feeling more than a little threatened by what is currently coming from the MAGA Corral, where Florida Orange, another bad outlaw, is on a rampage without precedent in the Oval Office, disregarding the Constitution, the law, and of course his oath of office to defend both.
It won’t be the Arizona Rangers, but the law is coming for the Florida Orange. Don’t worry, good citizens; the law will win because, aside from the fact that the person with the biggest club wins, society, let alone civilization, cannot survive without some kind of legislation.
The countermanding lawsuits come in as the illegal executive orders come out. Since the question today is whether the nation’s highest office is subject to the Constitution and laws that the rest of us must respect and abide by, more judges are siding with the people nationwide every day, and there is no end in sight.
The backlash, which is currently coming from a wide range of people affected by Florida Orange’s illegalities, doesn’t seem to be abating. No, even if you try to replace public servants with your own henchmen, you cannot terminate them without cause. No, you cannot use executive orders to usurp Congress’s constitutional authority to create laws and appropriate monies. Furthermore, you cannot just decide to terminate agreements you have with companies, people, state and local governments, and educational institutions.
Similarly, it is much simpler to pontificate about the alleged issues with long-standing legal obligations to neighbors and allies than it is to ruthlessly disregard the dire and increasingly pervasive repercussions of breaking such promises.
Indeed, the effects are now being felt by the general public as the false pledges to contain inflation on Day One are abandoned in favor of stupid, self-inflicted policies that place an increasing financial burden on large segments of the population.
The situation has deteriorated to the point where the Pope has intervened, warning Florida Orange that things will go south. This move has upended the fake Christianity that MAGA’s henchmen so ardently promoted.
Nearer to home, the governor and legislature of Montana are regrettably attempting their own kind of MAGA crazy. Here, it’s about dismantling the fundamental laws that, as required by the state constitution, safeguard the environment for Montanans now and in the future. Once more, they can attempt to force their way through the door to the avaricious robber barons, but we in the West have a lot of experience dealing with those as well as the costly and protracted effects of deregulation.
Rest assured, dear countrymen. Although the Florida Orange blitzkrieg may seem overpowering at the moment, this country hasn’t existed for 250 years on the basis of a cult of personality or a perverted desire for total control. We are and will continue to be a legal nation, or we will cease to exist as such.
