A woman in Texas, age 20, is accused of killing her boyfriend. She reportedly said she “blacked out” and woke up covered in blood while the victim was being stabbed in the neck and hit over and over with a baseball bat.
Police said that McKenzie Renee Eary was arrested on Friday night and charged with one count of murder in the brutal death of 24-year-old Gregory Mandle Bobenouax II.
The Port Neches Police Department said in a news statement that on October 18, 2024, around 9:30 p.m., they got a 911 call from The Palms apartment complex in the 800 block of Ridgewood Drive, which is about 250 miles east of Austin.
As police were on their way to the address, they were told that one of the people involved was already at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas and the other was “possibly deceased in an apartment at the complex.”
When first responders got to the scene, they said they went into the apartment and found Bobenouax, an adult male victim, laying dead on the bloody living room floor.
The statement says, “From what we saw at the scene, it looked like the man had been stabbed and hit with a baseball bat.”
Beaumont ABC and NBC station KBMT got a probable cause affidavit that said Bobenouax seemed to have “massive blunt force trauma to his head and neck” and a “deep puncture” on one side of his neck.
While other officers went to the hospital to talk to Eary, who was getting treatment after saying she had been raped, officers at the apartment complex gathered evidence and talked to witnesses.
According to Beaumont CBS, The CW, and Fox station KFDM, Eary told police that she got into a fight with Bobenouax when she got home from work that night.
She said that he was her live-in boyfriend and the father of her child. In the middle of the fight, Eary said Bobenouax hit her in the back of the head with a closed fist and then choked her so badly that she “blacked out.”
Eary is said to have said that she was covered in blood when she woke up from the sleep. Then she called a family member to come get her and her child. After that, the family member took Eary to the hospital.
A number of neighbors who were interviewed by police said they could hear the pair fighting in their apartment. Sometime after the fight seemed to be over, an old woman was said to have shown up at the couple’s house.
A number of neighbors said they remembered hearing the older woman saying “how, how, how, how!”
Police arrested Eary at the hospital and took her to the Jefferson County Jail, where she was charged with murder. Records show that she is being held on a $100,000 bond right now.
KFDM said that Eary still has warrants out for his arrest in Indiana for disorderly conduct, failure to appear, being drunk in public, and minor consumption.
