Jefferson City man arrested for alleged serious maltreatment of a newborn infant

A man from Jefferson City was arrested on Thursday for allegedly hurting a baby less than one month old very badly.

There are court records that show on October 21, a baby was taken to the University of Children’s Hospital with serious injuries.

Police were told by the victim that they woke up on Monday to the sound of the child screaming and crying very loudly.

When they were found, they were badly hurt, so they were taken to a nearby hospital right away.

The victim said they didn’t know what happened to the child but that the suspect, IsaiahWestley Brendon Smith, was at home early in the morning taking care of the baby.

The Jefferson City Police Department (JCPD) did more research and found that Smith’s first claim was that the baby couldn’t be soothed, but they eventually fell asleep and were put in their bassinet.

The police then saw Smith change his story several times in the probable cause statement before he made his final claim.

Court records show that Smith said the baby’s head hit a dresser hard by accident before he forced them into the bassinet crown-first.

The JCPD saidSmith saw that the child’s head was crooked after what happened, but they thought the child had a “migraine.”

According to the official records, the child had multiple skull fractures, brain bleeding, brain swelling, orbital injuries, facial bruises, and two broken clavicles, which caused seizures.

The man was charged with third-degree domestic assault and abuse or neglect of a child causing serious emotional or physical harm—no sexual contact.
