Multiple residents are displaced by a fire at the Southern Pines apartment

A fire early this morning in Southern Pines forced some people to find temporary housing.

They were called to the flats at 135 Murray Hill Road for an outside fire at 5:59 a.m. Saturday. Aberdeen Fire & Rescue were also sent to the scene because Southern Pines Fire Department was on a different call at the same time. When they got there, the call was changed to a building fire, which sent more help to the scene.

Chief Mike Cameron of the SPFD says the fire began in the back of the house and moved up a wall and into the attic. The fire could spread to more than one room because it was in the attic.

It looked like the fire marshals were focusing their inspection on a wooden deck of one of the units.

There was damage from smoke and water in all five units, and there was fire damage in at least three units. The fires did most of their damage to the back wall of one unit.

There were people living in four of the five flats when the fire broke out. The Red Cross was called to help one person, but everyone else was able to find temporary housing on their own.

The fire did not hurt anyone. While the police and firefighters were on the scene, Murray Hill Road was stopped.
