A woman’s volleyball player for the San Jose State Spartans named Brooke Slusser spoke out against the team’s transgender player Blaire Fleming and was then suspended.
Melissa Batie-Smoose, who was the team’s associate head volleyball coach, was suspended for life. The move came just a few days after she sent a Title IX complaint to the school, saying that Fleming and an opponent worked together to hurt Slusser and help the team lose a match.
“To keep my team safe, my assistant coach told the truth.” Then… they take her off. They took away the only part of the program that made us feel safe.
Because she thought it was the right thing to do for the 18 women on the team. “Not a single man,” Slusser wrote on X.
Not only that, but Slusser also sued the school.
Suit says San Jose State didn’t tell any of its recruits that it had a transgender athlete on the team, even though “this was now a well-known fact to the athletic department and virtually everyone else at SJSU” when she joined the suit in May, led by Riley Gaines, a former college swimmer and OutKick host.
After the suspension, San Jose State told OutKick what they had to say.
“The associate head coach of the San Jose State University women’s volleyball team is not with the team at this time, and we will not provide further information on this matter,” the group said.
At the end of the punishment, Batie-Smoose said she was told not to talk to the media.
“This is just another form of what San Jose State has been trying to do – silence people that are speaking up for their First Amendment rights and for what’s right,” she said.
It was important to her that she stood firm on the idea that only women should be able to play women’s sports.
San Jose State beat New Mexico 3-1 in their game on Saturday. There are five games left in the season.
